For print-ready files, follow these technical specifications:

• Resolution: 300 DPI minimum. Anything lower will appear blurry when printed.

• Bleed: Extend background colors and images 3mm (0.125 inches) beyond the trim line on all sides. This prevents white edges if the cut is slightly off.
• Safe zone: Keep important text and logos at least 5mm (0.2 inches) from the trim edge to avoid cropping.

Most online printers accept PDF, PNG (at 300 DPI), or AI files. PDF is the safest format because it preserves fonts, colors, and vector graphics exactly as designed.

Design Principles for Cards

Effective business card design follows a few core principles:

Hierarchy. Your name should be the most prominent element, followed by your title or role, then contact information. Guide the reader's eye from the most important information to the least important. Use font size, weight, and spacing to establish this hierarchy.

Whitespace. Resist the urge to fill every millimeter. A card with generous margins and spacing between elements looks confident and professional. Cramped text signals that you tried to fit too much information into too small a space.

Limit your palette. Two or three colors are enough. Use your brand's primary color as an accent and keep the rest neutral. A single strong color on a clean background is more memorable than a rainbow of competing hues.

Typography. Use no more than two typefaces — one for headings and one for body text. Sans-serif fonts (Helvetica, Inter, Roboto) are safe choices for modern, clean cards. Serif fonts (Garamond, Georgia) work well for traditional or luxury brands. Avoid decorative or script fonts for anything other than the recipient name, and only if the script is highly legible.

What to Include (and What to Leave Off)

A business card should contain:

• Your full name
• Your job title or role
• Company name and logo (if applicable)
• Phone number
• Email address
• Website URL

Optional additions: a QR code linking to your portfolio or LinkedIn profile, your physical address (if clients visit your office), and social media handles (only if they are professionally relevant).

Leave off: fax numbers (unless your industry requires it), multiple phone numbers (pick one), mission statements, and taglines that take up valuable space without adding contact utility. Every element on the card should help someone reach you or understand what you do.
