Why Date Math Matters

Date calculations are embedded in everyday life. How many days until a deadline? When does a 90-day warranty expire? How many business days between two dates for payroll? What date falls 6 weeks from today for a project milestone? These questions seem simple but the math is deceptively tricky.

Months have different lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days). Leap years add a day every four years — except for years divisible by 100, unless also divisible by 400. Business day calculations must skip weekends and often holidays. Time zones can shift a date forward or backward depending on location. What feels like a straightforward subtraction problem actually involves a tangle of exceptions.

Calculating Days Between Dates

The most common date calculation is finding the number of days between two dates. This is used for project duration tracking, contract period calculation, age computation, interest accrual, and countdown planning.

The calculation itself is straightforward once both dates are converted to a common reference. Most systems convert dates to a Julian Day Number or Unix timestamp (seconds since January 1, 1970), subtract, and convert the result back to days. The formula accounts for all calendar irregularities because the conversion handles them internally.

When counting days between dates, clarify whether the count is inclusive or exclusive of the start and end dates. "From January 1 to January 3" could be 2 days (exclusive of start) or 3 days (inclusive of both). Legal and financial contexts often specify which method to use — a 30-day notice period starting January 1 typically means the notice expires on January 31 (inclusive).

Business day calculations add another layer of complexity. Counting only Monday through Friday is the basic form, but many applications also exclude public holidays. The specific holidays depend on the country and sometimes the industry — banks observe different holidays than government offices in many jurisdictions.

Adding and Subtracting Days

Adding days to a date answers questions like "What date is 60 days from today?" and "When does this subscription renew?" Subtracting answers "When should I have started to meet this deadline?" and "What was the date 90 days ago?"

Simple cases are obvious: January 15 plus 10 days is January 25. But crossing month and year boundaries requires care: January 25 plus 10 days is February 4 (not February 5, unless January has 31 days — which it does). Leap year boundaries are the trickiest: February 27, 2024 plus 3 days is March 1, 2024 (2024 is a leap year, so February has 29 days). The same calculation in 2023 gives February 28 plus 3 days equals March 3.

Adding months and years introduces ambiguity. What is January 31 plus one month? February has no 31st day. Different systems handle this differently — some return February 28 (or 29), others return March 3 (treating it as 31 days forward). Common Use Cases

Project management: Calculating sprint durations, milestone dates, delivery deadlines, and buffer periods. If a project starts on March 10 and the client expects delivery in 8 weeks, the deadline is May 5 — but if you only count business days, the effective deadline shifts.

Legal and contracts: Notice periods, statute of limitations, filing deadlines, and contract durations are all defined in days, months, or years. Legal date calculation often has specific rules — "30 days" might mean calendar days or business days depending on the jurisdiction and context.

Finance: Interest calculations, payment due dates, maturity dates, and fiscal period boundaries all require precise date math. The "30/360" convention in bond markets treats every month as 30 days and every year as 360 days for interest calculation, which differs from actual calendar math.

Healthcare: Pregnancy due dates (280 days from the last menstrual period), medication schedules, follow-up appointments, and vaccine intervals all rely on accurate date calculation.

Travel planning: Visa validity periods, booking windows, cancellation deadlines, and trip duration calculations. A 90-day tourist visa starting on arrival means you need to know exactly what date falls 90 days later.

Working with Weeks and Months

Weeks are straightforward — one week is always 7 days. Converting between days and weeks is simple division and multiplication. "12 weeks" is always 84 days, regardless of when you start counting.

Months are more complex. "One month from January 15" is February 15, but "one month from January 31" has no clean answer because February 31 does not exist. Most date calculators treat "one month" as advancing to the same day number in the next month, capping at the last valid day if necessary. So January 31 plus one month becomes February 28 (or 29 in a leap year).

Years follow similar rules. One year from February 29, 2024 becomes February 28, 2025 because 2025 is not a leap year. If you mean "365 days later," specify that explicitly rather than saying "one year."

For financial and legal purposes, always clarify whether "months" means calendar months (same day, next month) or a fixed number of days (30 or 31). The difference can shift deadlines by 1-3 days, which matters in time-sensitive contexts.
