An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to a network. It serves two main purposes: identifying the host or network interface, and providing the location of the device in the network. Think of it as your device's address on the internet.

IPv4 addresses are 32-bit numbers written as four groups of digits (e.g., 192.168.1.1), allowing about 4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 addresses are 128-bit numbers written in hexadecimal (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334), providing a virtually unlimited number of addresses to accommodate the growing number of internet-connected devices.

A public IP address is assigned by your Internet Service Provider and is visible to the outside world — it is how websites and services identify your connection. A private IP address is used within your local network (e.g., 192.168.x.x) and is not directly accessible from the internet. This tool shows your public IP address.

IP geolocation is generally accurate at the country level (95-99%) and reasonably accurate at the city level (50-80%), depending on the region and the IP database used. It is not precise enough to identify a specific street address. Mobile and satellite connections tend to be less accurate than fixed broadband.
